World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has called for global cooperation in addressing pollution and climate change.
She made the remarks on Monday in Umuahia while commissioning electric buses procured by the Abia State government. Okonjo-Iweala emphasized the importance of supporting initiatives that promote a safe climate for public health.
“One of the biggest challenges we face globally is pollution and climate change. Even though Africa contributes only three percent of global carbon emissions, all of us must contribute to a better climate for the world,” she said.
The former Nigerian Finance Minister praised Governor Alex Otti for making Abia the first state in Nigeria to officially launch electric buses and expressed hope that other states would follow suit.
Governor Otti described the buses as a step toward a zero-emission future. He highlighted that the vehicles, designed to accommodate Persons Living with Disabilities, can cover 400 to 450 kilometers on a full charge.
The governor also announced that the buses would provide free transportation for Abia commuters between December and early January 2026 on scheduled routes. For passenger safety, the buses are equipped with special cameras to monitor and record unlawful acts.
