The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has confirmed that the National Identification Number (NIN) issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) will now automatically serve as the Tax Identification Number (TIN) for individual Nigerians.
The announcement, part of a public awareness campaign on new tax laws, also clarified that registered businesses will no longer need a separate Tax ID. Their Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number will act as their official tax identifier under the revised system.
The clarification follows public concerns over Tax ID requirements for transactions such as bank account registration. The FIRS noted that this system, outlined in the Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA) effective January 2026, consolidates all previous tax identification numbers into a single, unified identifier.
“The Tax ID unifies all Tax Identification Numbers previously issued by the FIRS and State Internal Revenue Services into a single identifier,” the FIRS stated. “For individuals, your NIN automatically serves as your Tax ID, while for registered companies, your CAC RC number is used.”
The Service emphasized that the reform simplifies taxpayer identification, prevents duplication and tax evasion, and ensures fairness in the system. The public was urged to ignore misinformation about the change. The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has confirmed that the National Identification Number (NIN) issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) will now automatically serve as the Tax Identification Number (TIN) for individual Nigerians.
