What You Should Know as a DBS Pensioner

As a DBS (Defined Benefit Scheme) pensioner, it is essential to understand the verification process and what to do if you’ve missed any important steps in the process. Below are some frequently asked questions and guidelines for pensioners:

1. Missed General Verification Exercise

If you’ve missed the general verification exercise and have not received your pension, you can still get verified by visiting one of the Directorate’s offices in Abuja or Lagos. Make sure you bring all the relevant documents required for verification. The verification is scheduled as follows:

  • Tuesday: Customs, Immigration and Prisons, and Parastatal Pensioners
  • Wednesday: Civil Service Pensioners
  • Thursday: Police Pensioners and Parastatal Pensioners

However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the verification process is strictly by invitation. Before attending, pensioners must send their documents to [email protected] for review, and only after approval will you be invited for verification.

2. Verification for Pensioners Outside Nigeria

If you are not currently in Nigeria and have missed a verification exercise, which has led to the suspension of your monthly pension, you can still take action. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Go to the nearest Nigerian Embassy or High Commission to obtain an “I Am Alive” Certificate.
  2. Attach your resident permit and the data page of your international passport.
  3. Include relevant career progression documents.
  4. Forward these documents to [email protected] or [email protected] through a third party, or directly via email.

Once your documents are validated, your monthly pension will be restored until you can come into Nigeria for in-person verification.

3. Submitting Documents After Verification

If you have already been verified, you do not need to resubmit all your documents when you make a complaint. In such cases, only the following are required:

  • Your verification slip
  • Statement of account (for the last six months before your complaint)

4. Verification for Defunct Parastatal Pensioners

If you worked in a defunct parastatal, it’s important to note that PTAD has concluded the verification process for pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme. If you have not been verified yet, please follow the instructions outlined in Question 13 to be verified and subsequently enrolled for Mobile Verification.

5. Verification for Pensioners Who Cannot Travel

For pensioners who are frail or unable to travel to the nearest Zonal Office, there’s still an option for verification:

  1. Send required documents, including a full-sized photograph, contact details, career documents, and a medical report indicating the reasons you cannot travel.
  2. Your documents should be sent through a third party to the nearest Zonal Office.
  3. If your documents are reviewed and accepted, a Mobile Verification Team will be dispatched to verify you at your location.

This option is available for those who are unable to travel due to health issues or other conditions.
