Forum Addresses Equitable Access to Resources in Coastal Communities

In a bid to address environmental, economic, and educational equity, especially in coastal communities and among young people, Rite on the Beach, a sustainability-focused initiative, recently held its symposium titled “Access to Resources”.

The event brought together key stakeholders to discuss the growing issue of plastic waste and explore how it can be transformed into valuable economic opportunities. These opportunities aim to support livelihoods, promote education, and foster community development, all while ensuring the protection of marine ecosystems.

Key Discussions and Focus Areas

Speakers at the symposium emphasized the importance of partnerships, data, innovation, and inclusive policies in providing communities with the tools, knowledge, and infrastructure required to actively engage in the circular economy. The discussions underscored the need for a collective effort to address the plastic waste crisis and its broader socio-economic impacts.

“We are committed to adding value to communities through data and education,” said Akintunde Disu, Founder of Rite on the Beach. He continued, “Our work focuses on identifying overlooked resources, such as plastic bottles on the beach, and converting them into opportunities for economic growth and environmental sustainability.”

Achievements and Impact

Over the past three years, Rite on the Beach has removed 30 tons of plastic bottles from beaches in Lagos, recycled them, and partnered with universities, including the University of Lagos, to develop innovative solutions to this growing environmental challenge.

The symposium highlighted that access to resources is pivotal in empowering communities to take charge of their own environmental and economic development. This approach ensures that local communities can harness available resources to improve their livelihoods and contribute to broader sustainability goals.

The Future of Sustainability in Nigeria

By leveraging partnerships and innovative solutions, Rite on the Beach is looking to scale its efforts and create a more sustainable future for all Nigerians. Through data-driven strategies, education, and collaborations, the initiative aims to empower communities to actively participate in environmental preservation and economic progress.

Rite on the Beach extends an invitation to all stakeholders to join its mission of promoting sustainability, equity, and economic growth in Nigeria.

Together, through innovative solutions and inclusive action, the initiative envisions a cleaner environment and more prosperous communities for all.
