Beirut, Lebanon – The Israeli army has confirmed that an alleged member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was killed in airstrikes across Lebanon, marking another escalation in near-daily violations of the ceasefire with Hezbollah.
The strike comes amid heightened tensions in southern Lebanon, just hours after a previous Israeli attack, and as US-brokered diplomatic talks continue between Israel and Lebanon.
Details of the Airstrikes
Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) reported that a drone strike on Thursday hit a vehicle along Hosh al-Sayyed Ali road in the Hermel district, killing two people.
The Israeli army identified one of the deceased as Hussein Mahmoud Marshad al-Jawhari, an alleged member of the IRGC’s Quds Force, killed in the Ansariyah region of southern Lebanon. Israel accused him of conducting “Iran-directed terror activities against Israel and its security forces from Syria and Lebanon.”
The IRGC has not yet responded to the allegations.
Additional Strikes
- A pickup truck was targeted at the entrance to Safad al-Batikh in southern Lebanon’s Bint Jbeil district.
- The Israeli army confirmed killing a Hezbollah member in southern Lebanon.
- On Wednesday night, a passer-by was injured in a drone strike on a car in the Tyre district’s Jennata town.
Ceasefire Violations and Casualties
A ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah was established in November 2024 following over a year of cross-border attacks during Israel’s war in Gaza. Despite the truce, Israel has conducted nearly daily airstrikes in Lebanon.
- UN estimates: Over 300 people killed since last year’s ceasefire, including approximately 127 civilians.
- From January to November 2025: Israeli forces carried out nearly 1,600 strikes across Lebanon, according to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED).
Israel maintains that its operations are aimed at targeting Hezbollah fighters and infrastructure, calling for the group’s full disarmament under the terms of the ceasefire.
Regional and International Context
The strikes occur amid US-led efforts to mediate direct talks between Israel and Lebanon. Analysts warn that continuous Israeli air raids risk destabilizing southern Lebanon and could escalate tensions with Iran, which supports Hezbollah and the Quds Force.
The United Nations and international observers have repeatedly expressed concern over civilian casualties in Lebanon, highlighting the fragile nature of the ceasefire and the risks of renewed conflict.
