‘Sar Tan Se Juda’ Slogans Raised on Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan’s Directions: Chargesheet in Bareilly Violence Names 38 Accused

Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh – A fresh chargesheet filed in connection with the September 26 violence in Bareilly has revealed that aggressive slogans of “sar tan se juda” (beheading) were raised following directions from cleric Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, according to police officials. The chargesheet, submitted on Friday, also stated that police teams were attacked at multiple locations during the unrest, with the crowd allegedly acting on the instructions of Khan, president of the Ittehad-e-Millat Council (IMC).

The chargesheet names 38 people, including Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, as the primary accused in the violence. Superintendent of Police Manush Pareek told reporters, “Chargesheets have already been filed in 10 cases related to the violence in the city,” highlighting the extensive nature of the police investigation.

The unrest erupted after Tauqeer reportedly called his supporters to gather at the Islamia College grounds following Friday prayers. Tensions escalated when the crowd became unruly, prompting police to resort to lathi-charge at multiple locations to control the situation.

In the latest case, registered at Baradari police station, the accused include Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, Mohammad Azam, Farhat Khan, Moin Khan, Umed, Mustaqim, Arwaaz, Nazim Raza Khan, Mohsin, among others. Police noted that one of the accused is a minor, while two are residents of Shahjahanpur.

“A total of 10 FIRs were registered at Baradari, Kotwali, Prem Nagar, Qila, and Cantt police stations on September 26, with two more cases added later. Chargesheets have so far been filed in the 10 main cases involving over 100 accused, of whom 87 are currently in jail. Investigations in two cases are still ongoing,” Pareek said.

Inspector Dhananjay Pandey of Baradari police station detailed the sequence of events, stating that violence initially broke out when miscreants attacked a police team near Shahdana Road during routine city patrol. Following Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan’s call, the crowd allegedly began chanting “tan se juda” slogans and attempted to march toward Islamia Maidan.

As police reinforcements arrived, another confrontation occurred at Shyamatganj Bridge, where around 200–250 people, including those named in the chargesheet, reportedly attacked the police team again. The crime branch, led by Inspector Sanjay Dheer, conducted the investigation that resulted in the filing of the latest chargesheet. Officials added that nine additional names were identified during the probe and included in the chargesheet.

Bareilly had turned tense on September 26 after protests against FIRs related to “I Love Muhammad” posters escalated into clashes with the police. Demonstrators had been denied permission to hold a rally, which reportedly triggered violent confrontations following Friday prayers. Multiple people, including police personnel, were injured in the clashes.

Authorities have emphasized that the ongoing investigations aim to hold all individuals involved accountable, especially those inciting violence and directing crowds to commit acts against law enforcement. With several FIRs already registered and the latest chargesheet naming high-profile leaders, the case continues to be a focus of law enforcement in Uttar Pradesh.
