Van Gerwen Says “It’s Time” for Peter Wright to Retire After World Championship Loss

Michael van Gerwen has suggested that two-time world champion Peter Wright should consider retirement following his surprising early exit from the 2026 PDC World Darts Championship.

Wright Loses in Straight Sets to Debutant Merk

Seeded 30th, Wright was eliminated in straight sets by German debutant Arno Merk, winning just two legs and averaging below 80. The result marked a dramatic low for the 55-year-old Scot, who has struggled for consistency in recent years.

“Given his inconsistent record lately, I’m not surprised by his performance. It’s time for him to retire anyway.” – Michael van Gerwen

Van Gerwen, a three-time world champion, had himself progressed to the third round with a win over William O’Connor at Alexandra Palace.

Gary Anderson Defends Wright

Fellow two-time world champion Gary Anderson urged perspective, saying players cannot perform at their peak all the time:

“We can’t play well all the time. People think we are robots… give folk a break. He’s having a blip.” – Gary Anderson

Anderson emphasized that even top players like Van Gerwen experience dips in form and cautioned against declaring careers over after one poor performance.

Wright’s Recent Form

  • World titles: 2020, 2022
  • Last European Tour win: 2024
  • Last Players Championship win: 2022
  • Premier League: Not selected for 2025 season
  • Grand Slam of Darts: Failed to qualify for the first time since 2012
  • Televised ranking tournaments: No quarter-final appearances in past two years

Despite the criticism, Wright remains a former world champion and one of the sport’s most iconic figures, known for his vibrant style and colorful attire.
