In a historic performance, Bhutan’s left-arm spinner Sonam Yeshey became the first cricketer in T20 international history to take eight wickets in a single match. The 22-year-old’s remarkable figures of 8-7 from four overs helped Bhutan secure an 82-run victory over Myanmar in the third of five men’s T20 internationals held in Gelephu.
Yeshey Sets a New T20 Benchmark
Yeshey’s performance surpassed all previous T20 records, establishing him as the bowler with the best-ever figures in both men’s and women’s T20 international cricket. Six of his wickets were caught, one was bowled, and another lbw, highlighting his dominance and skill on the field.
“I feel immense pride for creating a world record,” Yeshey told BBC Sport. “My family’s unwavering love, sacrifices, and belief in me gave me the strength to keep going through every challenge. Bhutan Cricket’s support and guidance provided the platform and confidence to push my limits.”
Match Summary
Bhutan batted first and managed 127-9, before Yeshey’s extraordinary bowling effort bowled out Myanmar for just 45 runs. The victory underscores Bhutan’s growing presence in international cricket, despite being an Associate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Previous Record Holders
Yeshey’s achievement eclipses the previous best T20 bowling figures for men, held by Malaysian seamer Syazrul Idrus, who took 7-8 against China in July 2023. In women’s T20 internationals, Indonesian off-spinner Rohmalia Rohmalia had the best figures of 7-0 against Mongolia in April 2024.
Bhutan Cricket and Player Support
Many players representing Associate nations are unpaid amateurs, but Bhutan’s national setup supports 36 centrally contracted players, equally split between men’s and women’s sides. This structure has enabled talented players like Yeshey to dedicate themselves fully to the sport and compete at an international level.
Currently, Bhutan is ranked 77th in the ICC men’s T20 rankings, while Myanmar sits 95th, highlighting the gap between the teams despite the competitiveness of the match.
Impact and Recognition
Yeshey’s record-breaking performance has drawn international attention to Bhutanese cricket and the potential of Associate nations in global tournaments. The achievement also provides inspiration for young cricketers in countries where cricket is still developing.
“Representing something bigger than myself motivates me,” Yeshey added. “I hope this performance encourages more players from Associate nations to chase their dreams on the international stage.”
