Kazuyoshi Miura, widely regarded as the world’s oldest professional footballer, has signed a loan deal with Japanese third division side Fukushima United until June 2026. Turning 59 in February, Miura continues to defy age, preparing for his 41st season in professional football.
This move marks Miura’s return to the J.League system’s top three divisions for the first time in five years, as he seeks to contribute on the pitch and inspire teammates and fans alike.
A Legendary Career Spanning Decades
Miura, affectionately known as “King Kazu” in Japan, began his football journey in 1986 with Brazilian side Santos, and has since played professionally in Italy, Croatia, and Australia, as well as Japan.
On the international stage, Miura scored 55 goals in 89 appearances for Japan, ending his national team career in 2000, two years after being controversially omitted from Japan’s first-ever World Cup squad. He also famously played against England at Wembley Stadium in 1995, a highlight of his storied career.
Miura has spent much of the past few years on loan from J2 League side Yokohama FC, with previous stints at Atletico Suzuka in Japan’s fourth tier. Last season, he made seven appearances without scoring, yet his passion for football remains undiminished.
Miura’s Vision at Fukushima United
Speaking about his latest challenge, Miura said:
“My passion for football hasn’t changed, no matter how old I get. I’m very grateful to be given this opportunity. I promise I will play with everything I have to make a contribution. Let’s make history together!”
The 58-year-old striker will aim to guide Fukushima United, who finished 10th in the 20-team third division last season, up the league standings and inspire younger players with his unparalleled experience.
This is Miura’s fourth loan since 2022 from Yokohama FC, where he has not featured since 2020. Despite his advancing age, Miura has repeatedly expressed his goal of continuing to play until he turns 60, demonstrating remarkable longevity and dedication to the sport.
