From coins to wheels: Man buys daughter a scooter for Diwali using ₹10 coins

In a remarkable story of determination and parental love, Bajrang Ram Bhagat of Jashpur has turned what could have been an ordinary Diwali into an extraordinary moment for his family. For seven months, Bhagat meticulously saved ₹10 coins, amassing a total of ₹40,000, which he used as part of the payment for a Honda Activa scooter for his daughter Champa. The total price of the scooter was ₹98,700, and the remainder was paid in cash, but the sheer effort of accumulating such a significant sum entirely in coins captured the imagination of the local community.

Bhagat’s decision to pay in coins was not driven by showmanship, but by a principle he has held firmly: he wanted to avoid taking a loan. “I preferred to make the purchase in cash rather than taking a loan,” he explained, emphasizing that the happiness of his child was motivation enough to patiently save and manage the coins over several months. His dedication is emblematic of the lengths to which parents will go to ensure the well-being and joy of their children, even in modest circumstances.

The painstaking collection process, which included saving whatever coins he could gather—mostly ₹10 coins but occasionally ₹100 notes—meant that each day, no matter how small the amount, contributed to a long-term dream. Bhagat said, “I used to save daily whatever I could, ₹10 or ₹100, whatever I used to have, to fulfill my dream of buying a scooter for the happiness of my child. I never wanted to take loans.”

When the day came to purchase the scooter, the Bhagat family visited the showroom in Jashpur. The volume of coins they brought was so large that counting them took over three hours before the payment was accepted. Anand Gupta, the showroom owner, recalled the unusual scene and marveled at the father’s dedication. To add a festive touch to the occasion, the family also won a mixer grinder through a lucky draw that was part of the showroom’s Diwali promotion.

For Champa, who is pursuing a B.Com degree, the gift is more than just a vehicle; it represents both freedom and convenience. The scooter will serve not only her personal transport needs but also help the family with daily chores and transportation of goods, making life significantly easier for them.

The Bhagat family lives in a house built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and benefits from several government welfare schemes, including the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi and the Mahtari Vandan scheme. While they have electricity at home, drinking water comes from a nearby borewell, reflecting a modest lifestyle in which small sacrifices and careful savings go a long way toward fulfilling dreams.

This story has resonated widely because it highlights values of patience, planning, and parental dedication. In a world increasingly dominated by instant gratification and credit, Bhagat’s methodical approach to saving coins and using them for a meaningful purchase stands out as a testament to perseverance. It also underlines the cultural importance of Diwalias a festival of joy, giving, and family, where even modest resources, when carefully managed, can create moments of immense happiness.

The narrative of Bajrang Ram Bhagat is more than a simple anecdote; it is an inspiring example of how determination and disciplined saving can achieve seemingly impossible goals. It reinforces the idea that financial prudence, coupled with love and commitment, can create lasting memories and tangible benefits for the next generation. Champa’s scooter is now a symbol not just of mobility, but of her father’s love, planning, and enduring hope, marking a Diwali that the family will remember for years to come.

This story also resonates beyond Jashpur, offering a poignant reminder that dreams do not require wealth, only patience, commitment, and consistent effort. In a society where loans and credit often dominate major purchases, Bhagat’s story is a celebration of self-reliance and personal resolve. The painstaking counting, storing, and ultimately paying in coins is symbolic of the meticulous care and attention he has given to his family’s welfare, demonstrating that even small, incremental savings can accumulate into something meaningful and transformative.

Through this act, Bhagat has not only gifted a vehicle to his daughter but also set an example of determination, love, and fiscal discipline for the community. In doing so, he has made this Diwali extraordinary, turning coins into wheels, and dreams into reality, leaving an indelible mark on everyone who has heard his story.
