Delhi has been placed on red alert amid a dense fog cover that has sharply reduced visibility across the national capital. Social media visuals show roads, residential areas, and highways blanketed in thick fog, making commuting extremely challenging. Vehicles are moving cautiously, particularly on major arteries such as the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, where low visibility is causing traffic slowdowns.
Impact on Air Travel
At least 128 flights were cancelled and eight were diverted at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport on Monday morning due to zero-visibility fog. The airport has implemented low-visibility procedures, and operations are currently under CAT III conditions, a precision landing system that allows aircraft to land safely in extremely poor visibility.
Delhi Airport Advisory:
“Due to dense fog, flight operations are currently under CAT III conditions, resulting in flight disruptions. Our on-ground officials are working closely with stakeholders to assist passengers across all terminals. Please contact your respective airlines for the latest flight updates. We sincerely regret any inconvenience caused.”
Passengers are strongly advised to check with their airlines before traveling, as further cancellations or delays are likely during the morning hours.
Weather Forecast and Visibility Concerns
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), dense to very dense fog is expected to persist through the night and early morning, particularly affecting early commuters. The Saket area and several other parts of Delhi are experiencing severely limited visibility, making travel by road and public transport hazardous.
- Temperature forecast: Maximum 23°C, Minimum 8°C
- Humidity: Very high, between 98–100%
- Sky conditions: Generally cloudy midweek, with possible light rain or drizzle providing temporary relief from cold
- Fog persistence: Early mornings will witness very dense fog, gradually reducing to dense fog by late morning; moderate fog is expected to continue in early mornings later in the week
Due to reduced visibility, drivers are advised to exercise extreme caution, use fog lamps, and maintain safe distances on roads.
Air Quality Advisory
Alongside fog, air quality is likely to remain poor, posing health risks, particularly for the elderly, children, and those with respiratory conditions. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities, wear masks if stepping out, and ensure proper ventilation indoors.
Summary
Delhi’s dense fog is causing significant disruption to both air and road travel. With CAT III operations in effect at IGI Airport and visibility dangerously low on major roads, authorities have urged residents and travelers to remain cautious, stay updated on flight schedules, and take health precautions due to poor air quality. The weather is expected to gradually improve by late mornings, but dense fog conditions may persist intermittently through the week.
