New Year’s Day Fire Destroys Electronics Shops in Ikotun, Lagos

A fire outbreak on New Year’s Day destroyed four electronics shops in Ikotun, Lagos State, causing significant losses to traders in the area.

The incident occurred early in the day at a building housing the shops, located beside the GUO Transport Company in Ikotun. All items within the affected section of the market were reportedly gutted by the fire.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), goods destroyed in the blaze included television sets, washing machines, and power generators.

A resident living near the building said quick action by neighbours helped prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the structure. He explained that residents initially attempted to put out the fire with water before officials from the Lagos State Fire Service arrived.

The resident praised the firefighters for their swift response, noting that their intervention prevented the fire from consuming the entire building and nearby properties.

He added that although the exact cause of the fire could not be confirmed, a faulty electrical circuit was suspected.

Authorities later cordoned off the affected area, and no casualties were reported.

The Ikotun incident is one of several fire outbreaks recorded in Lagos State in recent days. Earlier in the week, a similar fire razed parts of the Army Arena Market in Oshodi, destroying shops and goods before firefighters brought it under control.
