Two Killed, Several Injured in New Year Day Road Crashes Across Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has reported that two people died and several others were injured in multiple road accidents across Lagos on New Year Day.

In a statement on Thursday, LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq, said the incidents were largely caused by reckless driving and speeding.

The first fatal crash occurred at Iyana Itire, inward Oshodi, involving a Volkswagen commercial bus (SMK 850 HK) and a Toyota Sienna car (KSF 329 XL). LASTMA coordinated with the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SHEMU) to evacuate the deceased while managing traffic to prevent further disruption.

Another serious collision took place along Ibeju Bridge, inward Eleko axis of the Lekki–Ajah Expressway, where a DAF tanker collided with an Opel Zafira (EPE 537 GZ). Two people sustained critical injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital by LASTMA emergency teams.

A third accident occurred at Owode Elede, inward Owode Onirin along Ikorodu Road, involving a Volkswagen bus (AGL 713 XP) and a Toyota Corolla (AGL 607 JF). Four people were injured and transported to medical facilities, while traffic was restored.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the crashes as “avoidable tragedies” and offered condolences to the families of the deceased. He praised LASTMA personnel for their swift response, which helped prevent further casualties.

Bakare-Oki urged motorists to prioritize safety, obey traffic laws, and avoid reckless driving, emphasizing that LASTMA will continue enforcing traffic regulations, responding to emergencies, and promoting road safety, especially during festive periods.
