Brennan Johnson has completed a club-record £35 million move from Tottenham Hotspur to Crystal Palace, with the Wales international set to be included in the squad for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Newcastle.
The 24-year-old forward, who scored 27 goals in 107 appearances for Spurs, described his move as an exciting step in his career.
“I’m really excited and I’m really happy,” Johnson said. “Crystal Palace are such a great club, one that I’ve always admired. It’s a great time for me to be here and join the journey that this club is on – I’m super excited.”
Palace Secure Club-Record Signing
Johnson’s transfer surpasses the previous Crystal Palace record of £27 million paid for Liverpool striker Christian Benteke in 2016. The signing demonstrates Palace’s ambition to strengthen their attacking options and challenge in the Premier League this season.
Tottenham initially signed Johnson in 2023 for £47.5 million from Nottingham Forest, following his impressive performances in the Championship. Johnson played a key role in Spurs’ Europa League triumph, scoring the winning goal that ended their 17-year wait for silverware last season.
Johnson’s Limited Game Time at Tottenham
Despite his previous success, Johnson’s opportunities under Spurs manager Thomas Frank this season have been limited. The forward has scored four goals in 22 appearances, prompting the decision to seek regular first-team football elsewhere.
Bournemouth had also expressed interest in Johnson, aiming to fill the potential gap left by Manchester City target Antoine Semenyo, but Johnson ultimately opted for a move to Selhurst Park after discussions with Palace manager Oliver Glasner.
What This Means for Crystal Palace
Johnson’s arrival provides a major boost for Palace’s attacking line-up, adding pace, versatility, and proven goal-scoring ability. Fans will be eager to see him link up with the club’s existing forwards and make an immediate impact in the Premier League, starting with the upcoming clash against Newcastle.
With his combination of experience in top-flight English football and European competition, Johnson is expected to play a pivotal role in Palace’s ambitions for the season and help them push for higher positions in the table.
