Thomas Frank Understands Spurs Fans’ Frustration After Brentford Draw

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Thomas Frank has expressed understanding and solidarity with the frustration of Spurs fans following Thursday’s goalless draw at Brentford. The result left Tottenham in 12th place in the Premier League, having secured just two wins in their last 10 league matches.

Booed by Spurs Fans, Warmly Welcomed by Brentford

Returning to Gtech Stadium for the first time since leaving Brentford in June, Frank faced the harsh reality of fan discontent. Spurs supporters chanted “boring, boring Tottenham” during the stalemate, contrasting sharply with the standing ovation Frank received from Brentford fans before kickoff.

“I understand the frustration and I share it too,” said Frank.
“I will try to maybe turn that question around to say that if you are successful, the Tottenham fans will be behind you. So yes, I am booed last night, but I am pretty sure there are a lot of fans behind us.”

Frank, who spent seven years managing Brentford, acknowledged the challenge of his current role and emphasized the learning curve of navigating a transitional period at Tottenham.

“When you need to put in a big, big shift and it’s not smooth and it’s tough, it’s probably difficult to enjoy it. But when we look back on this spell, this first year when it was tough, you’ll think what a learning experience it made us so much better for the future.”

Defensive Improvements Amid Offensive Challenges

Under Frank, Spurs have maintained seven clean sheets this season, improving on the six kept under Ange Postecoglou in 2024-25. The manager is optimistic about the defensive foundation, even while continuing to develop the team’s attacking fluidity.

“It’s not perfect, we want to be a free-flow team. A few things I went to reinforce positively are our last two away performances. The foundation we were building was very strong defensively, which is hugely important.”

Frank highlighted ongoing work on offensive efficiency and minimizing mistakes to generate more scoring opportunities:

“Football is a game of mistakes. You lose the ball, that happens—but if half of those can be better, it will provide more attacks.”

Squad Challenges and Upcoming Fixtures

Tottenham continue to grapple with injuries and suspensions. James Maddison, Dominic Solanke, and Dejan Kulusevski remain sidelined, while Xavi Simons serves a suspension. Frank stressed the importance of managing expectations amid squad transitions:

“Expectation is good, and we are probably in a bit of a transition. Not that we don’t want to play better, but the club, the squad, the injuries, all that taken into consideration is part of it.”

Spurs will next host Sunderland in north London on Sunday at 15:00 GMT, giving Frank an opportunity to build momentum and continue his work on both defensive solidity and attacking development.
