The Awka Ancient Kingdom community in Anambra State has criticized the state government for discrediting the chieftaincy title “Anyanwu N’Awalu Ora” conferred on Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, widow of the late Igbo leader Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu.
The title was bestowed by His Imperial Majesty, Obi Austin Ndigwe, Ezeuzu III of Awka, in recognition of her contributions to the Igbo community and Nigeria. However, the Anambra State government described the title as “fake,” claiming the traditional ruler was an “impostor.”
In response, representatives of Awka’s sons and daughters, led by Prof. Emmanuel Obi, defended the title’s legitimacy. They said the government’s interference undermines Awka’s cultural sovereignty and Igbo traditional governance, stressing that chieftaincy matters are determined exclusively by the community.
The statement emphasized that the conferment on Bianca Ojukwu honors her national and international service, and called on Governor Charles Soludo to retract any statements discrediting the title.
The Awka community insisted the title remains valid and celebrated, reflecting their traditions and collective will.
