Peter Obi’s Move to ADC Could Shake 2027 Presidential Race — Ladan Salihu

Dr. Ladan Salihu, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), described Peter Obi’s defection from the Labour Party (LP) to the ADC as a “blockbuster moment” for Nigerian politics. Speaking in a monitored interview on Arise News, Salihu explained how Obi’s arrival could strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“Obi and Atiku together garnered over 60 per cent of votes in 2023. His move puts us in a strong position — one leg already in Aso Rock,” Salihu said.

Salihu emphasized that all candidates, including Obi and Atiku, will contest the ADC presidential ticket on equal terms, rejecting preconditions or promises as “anti-democratic.” He stressed that the party’s priority is building a strong opposition platform, growing membership, and presenting policies to Nigerians rather than focusing prematurely on primaries.

Responding to claims of internal factions, Salihu dismissed them as political tactics aimed at disuniting the party, assuring that ADC leaders across Nigeria are united and capable of resisting such pressures.

On the question of whether the next candidate should come from the South, Salihu argued that history does not support fixed regional arrangements. Instead, the ADC remains open to any candidate who meets constitutional and party criteria.

“It’s all about equity, fairness, and following the constitution,” he concluded.
