Female Organists Break Barriers at ‘Ladies on the Organ’ Concert

In a historic celebration of talent and faith, female organists under the Association of Nigerian Female Organists (ANFO) took center stage at the concert themed “Ladies on the Organ: Her Hymn, Her Organ”. The event, held at the Grace Hall of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) International Headquarters in Yaba, Lagos, showcased women mastering the pipe organ with skill, precision, and deep spiritual expression.

Organists from across Nigeria and various denominations demonstrated remarkable dexterity, coordinating hands and feet with confidence while delivering powerful performances that challenged traditional gender stereotypes in music.

Speaking on the initiative, MFM General Overseer Dr. Daniel Olukoya, ANFO patron, highlighted the historical dominance of men in organ music and shared that the association was founded last year to empower women in this field. “By the inspiration of the Almighty, this association was formed to encourage women to play the organ and show that what a man can do, a woman can also do,” a leader explained.

The association focuses on training, mentorship, and structured growth through lessons, seminars, and collaborative practice. Participants came from MFM, Methodist, Baptist, Deeper Life, and other churches, reflecting a commitment to inclusivity and spiritual enrichment.

Chief Host Dr. Shade Olukoya emphasized that the concert prioritized spiritual growth and collaboration over competition. “This is about women understanding their role in God’s plan, studying His Word, praying together, and growing together,” she said.

Organists like Temitope Aina, a University of Ibadan graduate and music educator, expressed their desire to inspire young girls to pursue organ and piano performance. Abiodun George, ANFO Coordinator, quoted Mozart, noting that “the organ is the king of all instruments, and a woman playing it is nothing less than a king.”

As the final notes echoed through the hall, the concert left a powerful message: when women are given opportunity and mentorship, they excel, inspire, and redefine boundaries. The association continues to provide a platform for women to develop their musical talents and fulfil their God-given potential.
