New Delhi: The Indian government on Friday approved 22 new electronics manufacturing projects under the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), including five companies in Apple’s vendor ecosystem. The approvals are expected to attract ₹41,863 crore in investments and create nearly 34,000 direct jobs, according to officials.
Apple Vendor Companies Among Approvals
Key Apple ecosystem companies receiving approvals include:
- Foxconn-linked Yuzhan Technology – mobile phone enclosures, Tamil Nadu, creating over 16,000 jobs
- Tata Electronics – mobile phone enclosures, Tamil Nadu, ~1,500 jobs
- Motherson Electronic Components
- ATL Battery Technology India
- Hindalco Industries
Other notable approvals include Samsung for display module sub-assembly in Uttar Pradesh, TDK India, BPL Limited, and Amphenol High-Speed Technology India.
Investment and Production Outlook
- The 22 projects are expected to generate ₹2.58 lakh crore in production.
- The third tranche of ECMS approvals brings the cumulative number of approved projects to 46, with total investments of ₹54,567 crore, projected production of ₹3.67 lakh crore, and over 50,000 direct jobs.
Segment-wise investments:
| Segment | Projects | Investment (₹ crore) | Key Details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile phone enclosures | 3 | 27,166 | Apple vendor ecosystem projects |
| Printed circuit boards (PCBs) | 9 | 7,377 | Domestic production ramp-up |
| Lithium-ion cells | 1 | 2,922 | Includes first anode material plant in India |
| Anode material for batteries | 1 | 1,835 | Marks first such facility under scheme |
| Others | 8 | – | Capacitors, camera modules, display sub-assemblies, connectors, laminates, aluminium extrusion, optical transceivers |
Geographical Spread
Projects are spread across Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.
Strategic Goals
Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that the ECMS projects aim to meet significant domestic demand and export potential:
- 45% domestic requirement for multilayer and HDI PCBs
- 100% for laminates and export
- 55% for lithium-ion cells
- 100% demand + export for enclosures
- 25% for connectors and camera modules
- 100%+ export for optical transceivers
Push for Electronics and Mechanical Design
Vaishnaw encouraged companies to develop mechanical and electronics design capabilities in India, offering government support for capital investment while industry covers operating costs.
- Companies would need Six Sigma-level quality skills for high-precision electronics.
- Government to support ~30% of efforts; industry expected to do the heavy lifting (~80%).
Impact on Employment
- Electronics manufacturing has already generated ~2.5 million jobs, with mobile manufacturing contributing 1.4–1.5 million.
- IT industry employs ~6.5 million, and global capability centres another 1.5 million, bringing total employment in electronics and IT to over 10 million.
Government Perspective
Minister of State Jitin Prasada emphasized India’s emerging role as a reliable global manufacturing partner, reducing dependence on China-dominated supply chains.
MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan highlighted the first anode material plant for lithium-ion cells as a key milestone, along with a second laminate project, critical for high-value PCB production.
These approvals reinforce India’s strategy to strengthen domestic electronics manufacturing, expand exports, and build global supply chain resilience while creating substantial employment.
