Ukraine has announced the development of a laser weapon capable of destroying targets over a mile away.
Vadym Sukharevskyi, Commander of the Armed Forces’ Unmanned Systems, shared the breakthrough during a defense summit in Kyiv this week.
“Today, we can already shoot down aircraft with this laser at an altitude of over 2 kilometers (1.2 miles). It truly works; it truly exists,” Sukharevskyi said.
According to CNN, referencing the Interfax-Ukraine news agency, efforts are underway to expand the weapon’s scale and capabilities. The laser, named “Tryzub” (Ukrainian for “trident”), pays homage to Ukraine’s national symbol of independence, strength, and unity.
Sukharevskyi provided no additional details about the Tryzub laser’s technical specifications.
