Leonardo DiCaprio has admitted that, despite the enduring popularity of his 1997 blockbuster Titanic, he has never rewatched the film. The Oscar-winning actor, now 51, made the revelation during a candid conversation with Jennifer Lawrence for Variety and CNN’s Actors on Actors series.
DiCaprio and Lawrence Discuss Revisiting Iconic Films
During the interview, Lawrence, 35, asked DiCaprio about revisiting his role as Jack Dawson in Titanic.
“Have you rewatched Titanic?” she asked.
DiCaprio replied, “No. I haven’t seen it before.”
Lawrence encouraged him, saying: “Oh, you should. I bet you could watch it now, it’s so good.”
DiCaprio admitted, “I don’t really watch my films, do you?” to which Lawrence responded jokingly that she rarely rewatched her own work either, except for a drunken viewing of American Hustle to check her performance.
DiCaprio on Why He Rarely Rewatches His Films
This is not the first time DiCaprio has discussed his habit of avoiding his own movies. In an interview with director Paul Thomas Anderson for Esquire, he said:
“I rarely watch any of my films, but if I’m being honest, there’s one that I have watched more than others. It’s The Aviator. That’s simply because it was such a special moment to me.”
He explained that working on The Aviator with Martin Scorsese allowed him to feel deeply involved in the production, beyond simply acting. “I felt responsible in a whole new way,” DiCaprio said, noting the film marked a turning point in his career where he became a true collaborator.
Reflections on Making Titanic
Directed by James Cameron, Titanic became one of the highest-grossing films of all time, starring DiCaprio alongside Kate Winslet.
DiCaprio told Deadline in 2016 that the film was a major experiment for him and Winslet, who were both coming from independent film backgrounds:
“We never predicted that it would be what it was, and I said, ‘Okay, slow down. Let all this pass a little bit, and let’s get back to… find something that… I knew it was going to be an adjustment.'”
He reflected on the immense expectations surrounding the film but emphasized that his focus remained on staying true to his intentions for the role.
Why Titanic Remains Special
While DiCaprio doesn’t rewatch most of his films, Titanic continues to resonate with audiences worldwide. The film’s emotional depth, epic scale, and iconic love story with Kate Winslet have cemented its place as a timeless classic in cinematic history.
DiCaprio’s comments offer fans a glimpse into the mind of an actor who values the creative experience of making a film more than reliving its final product on screen.
