New Delhi: The Indian Railways has spent ₹2,03,138 crore, or 80.54% of its total gross budgetary support (GBS) of ₹2,52,200 crore, in the first three quarters of the current fiscal year, the Ministry of Railways said on Monday. This marks a 6.54% increase in utilisation compared to the same period last year.
According to the ministry, the expenditure has focused on safety, capacity enhancement, infrastructure modernisation, and passenger amenities. Safety-related works alone accounted for 84% of the allocated funds, while ₹76,048 crore of the ₹1,09,238 crore allocated for capacity augmentation has been spent. Customer amenities saw 80% utilisation, amounting to ₹9,575 crore by the end of December 2025.
The ministry highlighted that consistent capital expenditure over the past decade has enabled the launch of 164 Vande Bharat trains, 30 Amrit Bharat services, the implementation of the Kavach automatic train protection system, over 99% electrification of the broad-gauge network, and extensive projects including new lines, gauge conversions, track doubling, and metropolitan transport investments.
“These initiatives have significantly improved speed, safety, and passenger comfort while keeping rail travel affordable,” the press note said, adding that with the Vande Bharat Sleeper train set for inauguration shortly, long-distance rail travel is poised for a transformation.
The ministry concluded that the GBS expenditure plan is on track, and the targets for FY 2025-26 are likely to be fully achieved.
