Yahaya Bello Presumed Innocent as N80.2bn Fraud Trial Continues — EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reaffirmed that former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.

The clarification comes amid public attention following Bello’s declaration of interest to contest the Kogi Central Senatorial seat in 2027. Bello is currently facing prosecution by the EFCC at the Federal High Court in Maitama, Abuja, before Justice Emeka Nwite, over alleged misappropriation and diversion of N80.2 billion in state funds during his tenure as governor.

EFCC Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwuajeren, explained on Arise Television’s Morning Show that criminal trials in Nigeria are time-consuming and require the presentation of witnesses and documentary evidence. He stressed that the court—not the EFCC—will determine the outcome of the case.

“Under the Nigerian Constitution, any person standing trial is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Bello’s political ambitions or party status do not influence the charges filed against him,” Uwuajeren said.

He further noted that the EFCC remains focused on presenting evidence and witnesses diligently, emphasizing that the Commission is committed to ensuring justice for both the prosecution and the defence.

“The trial is ongoing. It is not the Commission that decides guilt or innocence; it is the court. Our role is to faithfully prosecute the charges and ensure justice prevails,” Uwuajeren added.
