The 2027 elections are shaping up to be a complex and unusual contest. While the ruling APC appears dominant, the opposition, especially the PDP, seems unprepared, struggling to organize and present a credible challenge. According to Baba-Ahmed, the APC has effectively created an environment where it faces little resistance, controlling state governments, legislators, and even influencing electoral institutions.
APC’s strategy includes recruiting opposition leaders, notably in Kano and Plateau states, giving the party a significant advantage in these critical regions. Kano, previously a stronghold of the NNPP, may now swing to APC following defections led by Governor Abba. Similarly, Plateau State, long a PDP stronghold, faces disruption as defectors shift allegiances, potentially altering Northern political dynamics.
However, such mass defections carry risks. APC may struggle to manage the ambitions of new members, while the ADC and smaller parties could capitalize on dissatisfaction and disputes over tickets within the PDP and APC. The opposition must balance coalition-building with strategic planning to mount a credible challenge.
Baba-Ahmed stresses that, despite APC’s advantages, Nigerian voters remain decisive. A party that underestimates citizens’ expectations risks defeat, making it clear that 2027 will require extraordinary strategy, discipline, and courage from all contenders.
