
Jamil Azar, the longtime Al Jazeera Arabic anchor and journalist who helped shape the network since its founding, has passed away at the age of 89. Widely regarded as a pioneer in Arab journalism, Azar was also the author of Al Jazeera’s iconic motto: “The opinion and the other opinion.”

Early Life and Career
Born in al-Husn, Irbid, Jordan, in 1937, Jamil Azar began his journalism career at the BBC Arabic Service in 1965. Over three decades at the BBC, he served as a news translator, presenter, and producer, working on programmes such as Politics Between the Questioner and the Respondent and Arab Affairs in the British Press.
Azar’s expertise and editorial integrity made him a trusted figure in broadcast journalism, setting professional standards that would influence Arab media for years to come.
