Brown University Gunman Planned Attack for Months, Video Footage Shows

Investigators have revealed that Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, the gunman responsible for the fatal shooting of two Brown University students and an MIT professor, recorded videos in which he described planning the attacks for six semesters. The confessional-style footage shows that he expressed no remorse for his actions.

The Attacks

On 13 December 2025, Neves Valente, 48, fatally shot two students in a classroom at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island:

  • Ella Cook, 19
  • Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, 18

Nine others were injured in the attack.

Two days later, he fatally shot MIT professor Nuno Loureiro in his home near Boston before taking his own life. Investigators later discovered the gunman’s body and videos in a New Hampshire storage unit on 18 December, ending a three-state manhunt.

What the Videos Reveal

In the recordings, made in his native Portuguese, Neves Valente:

  • Said he planned the attack over six semesters.
  • Offered a defense of his actions but did not state a clear motive.
  • Showed no remorse, instead blaming “innocent, unarmed children” for their deaths.
  • Complained about being injured during the MIT attack when a bullet casing struck his eye.

“I honestly never thought it would take them so long to find me,” he said, referring to law enforcement during the campus attack.

Investigators noted that Neves Valente attended the same university in Portugal as MIT professor Loureiro, and the two were believed to have known each other.

The gunman also denied having a mental illness, and claimed his actions were not motivated by hatred toward the United States.

“I have no hatred towards America,” he said, calling his decision to move to the US a “mistake.”

Official Statement

The US Attorney for the District of Massachusetts released English translations of the video transcripts on Tuesday, stating:

“Although Neves Valente stated that Brown University was his intended target, he did not provide a motive for targeting students or the professor. The investigation will continue, but there is no ongoing threat to the public.”

Community Reaction

The attacks have deeply shocked the Brown and MIT communities and raised questions about how long it took authorities to identify the suspect. Memorials have been held for the victims, and officials continue to work with law enforcement to review the case.
