President Bola Tinubu has made a historic appointment, selecting Dr. Olugbemisola Titilayo Odusote as the new Director-General of the Nigerian Law School. This marks a significant milestone, as she becomes the first woman to ever lead the institution since its founding in 1962.
According to a State House press release issued by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Odusote’s appointment will take effect from January 10, 2026, for a four-year term.
Odusote, 54, currently holds the position of Deputy Director-General and Head of the Lagos Campus of the Nigerian Law School. She will succeed Professor Isa Hayatu Chiroma, whose tenure concludes on January 9, 2026, after serving eight years in office.
A Distinguished Academic Career
Odusote holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from Obafemi Awolowo University and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988. She further advanced her legal education with a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from the same institution, specializing in company and commercial law. Subsequently, she pursued a PhD in Law from the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom.
She joined the Nigerian Law School in 2001 as a lecturer and has progressively risen through the ranks. Over the years, she has held several prominent positions, including Head of the Academic Department, Director of Academics, and Head of Campus. Odusote has also served as a visiting scholar at Nottingham Trent University in the UK.
Contributions to Legal Education and Scholarship
Throughout her career, Odusote has contributed to the legal field both locally and internationally. She has published numerous scholarly articles in reputable law journals and presented at various legal education conferences.
She has also been actively involved in the Council of Legal Education and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), serving on several of their key committees.
New Responsibilities as Director-General
As Director-General, Odusote will oversee the academic leadership, administrative management, and strategic direction of the Nigerian Law School across its campuses nationwide. She will also serve as the primary liaison between the institution and key legal bodies, including the Council of Legal Education, the Body of Benchers, and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
Odusote’s appointment is a monumental step forward in the history of the Nigerian Law School, representing both a personal achievement and a symbolic victory for gender equality in Nigeria’s legal profession.
