Deji Adeyanju Slams Former AGF Abubakar Malami for Disobeying Court Orders During Tenure

Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has strongly criticized Abubakar Malami, the former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, accusing him of flouting several court orders while in office. Adeyanju, who is well known for his activism, called Malami’s actions “shameful” and warned that his behavior posed a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic fabric.

Violation of Rule of Law

Despite being a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Adeyanju argued that Malami’s tenure as the country’s chief law officer was marked by repeated disregard for judicial authority. He described Malami’s conduct as “dangerous” to the rule of law and democracy, saying it showed a troubling level of impunity and arrogance from someone in such a powerful position.

Adeyanju noted that Malami’s legacy was tarnished by his persistent failure to comply with legal decisions, and this behavior set a dangerous precedent for others in power. “Malami didn’t believe in the rule of law, even as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria,” Adeyanju remarked. “He didn’t obey several court orders during his time as AGF, and that conduct was shameful.”

Consequences of Arrogance

Adeyanju also pointed out that the former AGF’s eventual downfall after leaving office was the result of his actions while in power. According to the human rights lawyer, the once powerful Malami, who had enjoyed considerable influence within the Muhammadu Buhari administration, is now facing the consequences of his arrogance and abuse of office.

“Look at him today—reduced to absolutely nothing by karma. Those in power often forget that they will not always be in power,” Adeyanju warned.

Allegations of Corruption and Legal Battles

Malami’s reputation has been further marred by corruption-related allegations. He is currently embroiled in a legal battle, with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) prosecuting him and his family members on charges related to money laundering. The EFCC accuses Malami, his son Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami, and his wife Hajia Bashir Asabe of laundering over ₦8.7 billion. They face a 16-count charge involving conspiracy and money laundering, in violation of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

Court Proceedings

On January 7, 2026, a Federal High Court in Maitama, Abuja was scheduled to rule on the bail applications of the Malamis. The court had adjourned the matter, with the defendants remaining in custody at the Kuje Correctional Centre while the court considers the bail requests.

During a hearing on January 6, the defense team asked for more time to study the counter-affidavits served by the prosecution. The case continues to unfold, drawing attention to Malami’s controversial actions both during and after his tenure.

A Cautionary Tale for Those in Power

Adeyanju’s remarks serve as a cautionary reminder to those currently in positions of authority about the dangers of overreaching power and ignoring the rule of law. The activist emphasized that no one is beyond accountability and that the misuse of office will ultimately lead to a reckoning.
