Manchester United Manager Talk a “Waste of Time,” Says Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner

Manchester United have been heavily linked with Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner following the sacking of Ruben Amorim after just 14 months in charge. However, Glasner dismissed speculation about the Old Trafford vacancy, calling it a “waste of time” and emphasizing his focus on Crystal Palace.

Glasner Dismisses United Manager Speculation

Speaking ahead of Crystal Palace’s home clash with Aston Villa, Glasner, 51, remained cryptic about his future amid strong media and fan interest.

“I’m Crystal Palace manager. It just makes no sense and it’s wasted time for you to ask me any more questions, so I don’t talk about any other club,” Glasner said.

The Austrian coach also humorously referenced his contract, which includes a clause preventing him from “betting,” as a metaphor for why he avoids speculation:

“I’m not allowed to bet. My contract has one paragraph [that says] I’m not allowed to bet. I don’t look at it.”

Glasner’s Success at Crystal Palace

Since arriving at Selhurst Park in 2024, Glasner has impressed, guiding Crystal Palace to their first major trophy, the Football Association Challenge Cup (FA Cup), last season.

The Palace manager, out of contract at the end of the current season, confirmed last month that talks over a new deal were on hold, leaving his future open but reaffirming his commitment to his current club for now.

Glasner highlighted the short-term nature of football management, noting that even long contracts offer no guarantees:

“You can win trophies and six months later you aren’t the manager there anymore. There’s one situation that keeps you in your job – this is being successful.”

He cited the example of former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, who had 18 months left on his contract yet was sacked recently, emphasizing that success, not contract length, dictates a manager’s tenure.

Manchester United’s Managerial Search

Manchester United now face the challenge of finding a long-term replacement for Amorim, with Glasner among the bookies’ favorites. The club has yet to confirm potential candidates or engage in formal talks, and Glasner’s public dismissal of speculation makes him a less likely immediate contender.
