Nigeria Needs Special Courts for Corruption Trials – Kenny Okolugbo

Kenny Okolugbo, the former Consultant on Communications and Strategy to the President of the Senate, has called for the establishment of special courts dedicated solely to corruption trials in Nigeria.

Speaking in an interview on Arise Television, Okolugbo expressed concern over the growing challenge facing the judiciary in Nigeria, particularly as the number of corruption cases continues to rise. He emphasized the urgent need for a judicial framework specifically tailored to address the increasing number of corruption cases involving politically exposed persons.

In his view, holding such individuals accountable is essential for maintaining public trust in the government and the judiciary. “We must target politically exposed persons and make examples of them, demonstrating the consequences of corruption,” he said.

Okolugbo pointed to the limited number of high-profile cases in which former governors Joshua Dariye of Plateau State and Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State were convicted as an indication of how few politicians have been truly held accountable for their actions.

He warned that continued undermining of corruption enforcement agencies would significantly hinder the nation’s ability to combat this pervasive issue. According to Okolugbo, specialized courts would enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of corruption trials in the country.
