Arise TV anchor Rufai Oseni has stirred fresh debate online after resurfacing an old video of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, in which he firmly rejected the idea of choosing a political successor.
The video, recorded during Wike’s tenure as Governor of Rivers State, has gained renewed traction on social media amid ongoing political tensions in the state.
In the clip, Wike is heard declaring that he would never impose a successor on the people of Rivers State, stressing that leadership choice belongs solely to the electorate.
“The day I leave as Governor of Rivers State, in the name of Almighty God, I have no power to choose a successor because the people have the right to decide who leads them,” he said in the video.
The resurfacing of the footage comes at a time when the FCT Minister is actively touring all 23 local government areas of Rivers State, a move widely viewed as an attempt to reclaim political control from the current governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
During one of his recent engagements, Wike openly stated that he could become politically irrelevant if Governor Fubara secures a second term in office. He also vowed that what he described as the “mistake of 2023” would not be repeated in the next election cycle.
The contrasting positions between Wike’s past statements and his current political activities have triggered intense reactions online, with many Nigerians questioning the consistency of his stance on godfatherism.
The video continues to circulate on X (formerly Twitter), fueling discussions about political influence, loyalty, and power dynamics in Rivers State.
