Delhi Assembly Winter Session Disrupted as AAP MLAs Demand Kapil Mishra’s Resignation

New Delhi | January 8, 2026

Proceedings of the Delhi Legislative Assembly were disrupted on Thursday after Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs staged a protest inside the House, demanding the resignation of BJP leader Kapil Mishra over allegations of circulating a misleading video involving Leader of Opposition Atishi. Amid the uproar, the Speaker adjourned the House for 30 minutes.

The winter session of the Assembly began on January 5 and is scheduled to conclude later on Thursday.

The protest followed a formal complaint submitted by AAP MLA and Deputy Leader of Opposition Mukesh Ahlawat to Speaker Vijendra Gupta. In his letter, Ahlawat alleged that a video shared by Kapil Mishra on social media was selectively edited and misrepresented Atishi’s remarks during Assembly proceedings.

According to Ahlawat, the video circulated by Mishra was not part of the official Assembly record, raising questions about how the footage was accessed. He asserted that even in the clip posted publicly, Atishi could be heard urging the Speaker to allow a discussion, countering claims that she made any offensive remark.

The AAP legislative party has demanded the release of the complete, unedited footage from Assembly cameras to establish the full context of Atishi’s statements. The party has also sought strict action against Kapil Mishra, including the cancellation of his Assembly membership, for allegedly circulating false and manipulated content. Additionally, AAP has called for the suspension of other MLAs who shared the video along with what it described as an inaccurate transcription.

The controversy stems from an earlier incident in which Kapil Mishra accused Atishi of making an “insensitive” remark concerning Sikh religious figure Guru Tegh Bahadur during Assembly proceedings. On Wednesday, Mishra demanded a public apology from the Leader of Opposition and announced that a censure motion would be moved in the House to condemn her remarks.

Mishra has insisted that Atishi apologise to the citizens of Delhi, the Sikh community, and the Assembly, maintaining that her statement hurt religious sentiments. AAP leaders, however, have denied the allegation, asserting that the remarks were taken out of context and politically motivated.

The issue has further intensified tensions between the ruling AAP and the BJP in the Delhi Assembly, contributing to repeated disruptions during the ongoing winter session.
