The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported that 173 people lost their lives and 1,000 others sustained injuries in road traffic crashes across Jigawa State in 2025.
The State Sector Commander, Umar Masa’udu Matazu, revealed the statistics in an interview with newsmen, describing the figures as “tragic and largely avoidable.”
According to Matazu, the state recorded 315 road accidents during the year, with human error accounting for about 85% of the incidents. He identified over-speeding, overloading, and the use of expired or worn-out tyres as the leading causes.
“Human error accounted for the majority of these accidents. Many lives were lost unnecessarily, and properties worth millions of naira were destroyed,” Matazu said.
The FRSC official also highlighted a recent two-week period during which over 40 people died in multiple road crashes across the state, many sustaining injuries.
Matazu called on the Jigawa State government to enhance road safety measures by investing in modern equipment, improved logistics, and road infrastructure. He also urged motorists and the public to take personal responsibility by obeying traffic rules, adhering to speed limits, avoiding reckless driving, and maintaining vehicle tyres in good condition.
