Chennai, Jan 08, 2026 – The much-anticipated release of actor-politician Vijay’s film Jana Nayagan, originally scheduled for January 9, has been postponed following a legal tussle with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) over the issuance of a censor certificate.
The producers, KVN Productions LLP, announced the delay on X, stating:
“The release of Jana Nayagan has been postponed due to unavoidable circumstances beyond our control. We deeply understand the anticipation, excitement and emotions surrounding this film, and the decision was not easy for any of us. The new release date will be announced at the earliest.”
The postponement comes after the Madras High Court reserved its judgment on a petition filed by the producers challenging the CBFC’s delay in certification.
Court raises questions over CBFC’s process
Justice PT Asha observed that the Board appeared to have “acted solely on the basis of a complaint,” even though all objections previously raised had been addressed by the producers. The court noted that the film had already been cleared by the Examining Committee, subject to certain excisions and muted words, which the production team had duly implemented.
Despite compliance with the committee’s recommendations, the CBFC withheld the certificate, prompting the legal challenge.
Representing the CBFC, Additional Solicitor General ARL Sundaresan argued that under Rule 23(14) of the Cinematograph Certification Rules, the Chairperson of the Board has the authority to order a review of a film’s certification, either suo motu or based on received information, including complaints.
Justice Asha questioned whether the committee’s recommendations lose relevance once the Chairperson initiates such suo motu action, highlighting a procedural ambiguity at the heart of the dispute.
Fan anticipation and industry impact
The delay has disappointed fans across Tamil Nadu, where Vijay commands a massive following, and created uncertainty for the Tamil film industry’s early-year release calendar. Industry insiders note that Jana Nayagan was positioned as one of the biggest openings of the year, and the postponement affects promotions, theatre bookings, and ancillary revenue streams.
The High Court is expected to deliver its verdict soon, which could determine whether the film’s release can proceed without further alterations or delays. Meanwhile, the producers have pledged to announce a new release date “at the earliest,” keeping audiences on tenterhooks.
