New Delhi, Jan 08, 2026 – Samajwadi Party MP Mohibbullah Nadvi is under investigation following clashes and stone-pelting near the Faiz-e-Elahi Masjid in Delhi, which erupted after a late-night demolition drive by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) near Turkman Gate.
According to news agency ANI, Delhi Police has decided to summon Nadvi to join the investigation related to the stone-pelting incident targeting law enforcement officials.
Presence at the Site
The Joint Commissioner of Police (Central Range), Madhur Verma, confirmed that the MP was present at the site during the preliminary stages of the demolition drive. “In a preliminary investigation, it has come to light that he was present there, but had left by the time the demolition began. This is being investigated,” Verma told PTI.
Mohibbullah Nadvi represents Rampur Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh and also serves as the Imam of Parliament Street Mosque.
Sequence of Events
The MCD carried out an anti-encroachment drive late Tuesday night, and a social media post claiming that the Faiz-e-Elahi mosque was being demolished went viral.
Following the post, approximately 150 to 200 people gathered at the site and began pelting stones and glass bottles at MCD officials and authorities, according to PTI. The crowd reportedly included the SP MP.
When police deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd, clashes escalated, resulting in injuries to several police personnel. Authorities have detained 10 to 15 individuals in connection with the incident.
Investigation
Police are currently examining the MP’s role and presence during the events and are expected to call him for questioning. Investigators are also reviewing video footage and social media posts related to the incident to ascertain whether the SP MP actively participated or merely observed.
The MCD has clarified that the demolition drive targeted illegal encroachments near Turkman Gate and not the mosque itself.
