Washington, D.C. – The Trump administration has announced a sweeping withdrawal of the United States from 66 international organisations, including 31 United Nations entities and 35 non-UN organisations, in a move critics say will reshape global cooperation on climate, peace, and democracy.
Officials described the withdrawals as targeting organisations they view as promoting policies “contrary to US interests,” including climate initiatives, labor regulations, migration frameworks, and diversity programs often described by the administration as “woke.”
UN Organisations the US Is Exiting
The US will exit 31 United Nations entities, covering economic, social, and environmental areas:
- Department of Economic and Social Affairs

Key Notes:
- The US will also exit the UNFCCC, the foundational 1992 climate treaty underpinning the Paris Agreement. This withdrawal is particularly controversial as it is a Senate-ratified treaty, and legal challenges are expected.
- The US remains a member of the UN Security Council, World Food Programme (WFP), and UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), citing their essential security or humanitarian roles.
Non-UN Organisations Being Exited
The Trump administration is also withdrawing from 35 non-UN organisations, focusing on climate, science, culture, and security collaboration:
- 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Compact
- Colombo Plan Council

- Venice Commission of the Council of Europe
Implications:
- The withdrawals reflect a broader Trump-era foreign policy, emphasizing US sovereignty and unilateral decision-making.
- Critics warn this could weaken international efforts to tackle climate change, global migration, and security cooperation, while supporters argue it reduces US contributions to “ineffective or politicized” international forums.
