The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, in collaboration with other security agencies, has impounded 21 commercial motorcycles and arrested their riders for violating the ban on motorcycle operations along major roads and highways in Abuja.
The enforcement exercise, conducted on Thursday under the Operation Sweep initiative, also involved officials from the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO). The operation targeted major corridors and routes across the FCT, where commercial motorcyclists—popularly known as okada riders—were found flouting existing restrictions.
In a statement, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, said the arrests and seizures were carried out in accordance with laws governing traffic and security operations in the nation’s capital.
The police explained that the enforcement forms part of a sustained inter-agency strategy aimed at:
- Curbing traffic-related crimes,
- Preventing the use of commercial motorcycles for criminal activities, and
- Strengthening public safety across the FCT.
Commenting on the operation, FCT Police Commissioner Miller Dantawaye reaffirmed the command’s commitment to strict enforcement of traffic and security regulations. He warned that defiance of the motorcycle ban on major roads would continue to attract decisive enforcement actions, with similar operations expected across the six Area Councils of the FCT.
The police further urged residents to cooperate with security agencies, adhere to traffic and security directives, and report suspicious activities promptly through the command’s emergency lines.
