Manchester City Set to Sign US Midfielder Sam Coffey from Portland Thorns

Manchester City Women are reportedly finalizing a deal to sign United States midfielder Sam Coffey from Portland Thorns in a move that would strengthen City’s midfield ahead of the remainder of the Women’s Super League (WSL) 2025–26 season.

The English club is understood to be paying a transfer fee of around $800,000 (£600,000) for the 27-year-old, whose contract with the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side runs until the end of the 2027 season. Coffey has been a longstanding target for City, with initial approaches made over the summer.

“Terms have been agreed, and Coffey has been granted permission to fly to England to complete the move,” sources said.

Coffey’s Career and Achievements

Coffey has established herself as one of the world’s best defensive midfielders during her career with Portland Thorns, making almost 100 appearances in four seasons with the NWSL club. The midfielder has also earned 42 caps for the United States national team, playing a key role in both domestic and international competitions.

Known for her tactical intelligence, ball-winning ability, and leadership, Coffey has been instrumental in Portland Thorns’ midfield setup, combining defensive solidity with the capacity to initiate attacks from deep positions.

Manchester City’s WSL Ambitions

City currently lead the Women’s Super League 2025–26 season and view Coffey as a critical addition to maintain their dominance in England and in European competitions. By bringing in an experienced international midfielder, City aim to bolster squad depth and quality, particularly as they navigate a congested fixture schedule across domestic and continental tournaments.

Coffey’s versatility and international experience are expected to make her an immediate contributor to City’s midfield, helping the WSL leaders secure crucial points and strengthen their challenge in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

“Coffey’s arrival reflects Manchester City’s ambition to compete at the highest level domestically and in Europe. She is a proven midfielder and will be a key part of our squad moving forward,” a club insider said.

International and Club Experience

Coffey’s career highlights include multiple appearances for the USA Women’s National Team, where she has competed in friendlies, tournaments, and qualifiers against top international sides. Her leadership, composure under pressure, and defensive capabilities make her a highly sought-after player in the women’s game.

Her nearly 100 NWSL appearances with Portland Thorns also underline her consistency and professionalism, making her a ready-made addition for Manchester City Women’s immediate needs.

Transfer Outlook

With the move now in its final stages, Coffey is expected to join Manchester City in England imminently, ahead of the team’s upcoming WSL and Champions League fixtures. Fans will be eager to see how the American international adapts to English football and contributes to City’s ongoing quest for domestic and European success.
