Manchester City have officially signed Ghana international Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth in a record-breaking transfer worth approximately £65 million. The deal sees City meet Semenyo’s release clause, with £62.5 million payable in 24 monthly installments plus performance-related bonuses. The 26-year-old winger has signed a contract until 2031 and will wear the number 42 shirt, previously worn by Yaya Touré, the legendary midfielder who won three Premier League titles with the club.
“I am so proud to have joined Manchester City,” Semenyo said. “They have set the highest of standards and it’s a club with world-class players, world-class facilities, and one of the greatest managers ever in Pep [Guardiola]. My best football is yet to come, I am sure of that.”
Semenyo’s Farewell to Bournemouth
Semenyo ended his Bournemouth career on a high note by scoring a stoppage-time winner in a 3-2 victory against Tottenham. The London-born winger leaves the Cherries after making 110 appearances across all competitions, scoring 32 goals and providing 13 assists.
Semenyo joined Bournemouth in January 2023 for around £10 million from Bristol City, where he had spent the early part of his career. At Bristol City, he scored 21 goals and registered 21 assists in 125 appearances, while also having loan spells at Sunderland, Newport County, and non-league side Bath City.
Why Manchester City Signed Semenyo
Director of Football Hugo Viana praised Semenyo as an ideal addition to City’s squad:
“Antoine is a really exciting signing. He has huge quality, two great feet, pace, power, a habit of influencing games, and importantly, real room for growth and development. He has shown he can perform in the Premier League. He is humble, hard-working, professional, and totally focused on being a better footballer.”
Semenyo has enjoyed a stellar first half of the season, scoring 10 goals in 20 Premier League appearances, ranking third in the goalscoring charts behind Erling Haaland (20) and Igor Thiago (16). He also needs just one more league goal to equal his career-best Premier League tally of 11 goals in a single season.
Semenyo’s Style of Play
Semenyo is known for his pace, power, and direct attacking style, making him a threat in the final third. He excels at pressing from the front, winning possession high up the pitch, and creating scoring opportunities for teammates. Since the start of last season, he has won the ball back in the final third 51 times, more than any other Premier League player.
His combination of goal-scoring ability, dribbling, and defensive work rate makes him a natural fit for Pep Guardiola’s system at Manchester City, where versatility and high pressing are key components of the team’s tactical approach.
