Kano Family Raises Alarm Over Alleged Abduction, Forced Conversion of 15-Year-Old Girl

The family of a 15-year-old Christian girl, Ummi Tambaya, from Kadafa Bari District, Rogo Local Government Area, Kano State, has raised the alarm over her alleged abduction and forced conversion to Islam. The girl has been missing since December 1, 2025.

The family alleged that a young Muslim man from the village, who had repeatedly sought her hand in marriage, orchestrated her abduction after being refused. Efforts to locate Ummi reportedly revealed that she was being kept under the custody of the Hisbah Commander in Rogo, Malam Sani, who allegedly intended to convert her to Islam.

Pastor Kabiru Usman, familiar with the situation, claimed that individuals close to the Hisbah Commander identified the abductors as Abba Sheshu, Mansir Surajo, and Tasiu Bello. Usman alleged that the girl, who reportedly suffers from mental health issues, was held for a month without access to medical care.

Despite interventions by the Divisional Police Officer of Rogo, Suleiman Ibrahim, and the village district head, Umar Abdulkadir, the Hisbah Commander allegedly refused to release the girl. The family also accused the Department of State Services (DSS) in the area of failing to act and of demanding N20,000 under the guise of administrative costs.

Speaking to SaharaReporters, Shamsu Tambaya, a family member, narrated that the girl had been secretly influenced by the young man before being taken to the Hisbah commander. He emphasized that Ummi had never interacted with human rights organisations and stressed her age and mental health condition, arguing she is not capable of legally changing her religion.

The family has appealed to government authorities for urgent intervention to ensure the safe return of Ummi Tambaya and to hold those responsible accountable.

When contacted, the Hisbah Commander, Malam Sani, declined to provide details over the phone and insisted that inquiries be made in person at his office in Kano State.
