Ciara Mageean ‘Continuing to Find Joy in Every Day’ Amid Cancer Treatment

Ciara Mageean, European middle-distance champion and two-time Olympian from Portaferry, Northern Ireland, has shared a heartfelt update on her journey with cancer, expressing gratitude for the “kind words of support” she received during chemotherapy.

The 33-year-old athlete, who announced her cancer diagnosis in July 2025, posted on Instagram on Thursday, sharing photos of family, friends, and moments of joy over the festive period.

“I finished my 12th round of chemo just before Christmas, which meant I had a lovely chemo-free Christmas with my family,” Mageean wrote.

Finding Strength in Family, Friends, and Furry Companions

Mageean revealed how her support network, including her springer spaniel Sam, has helped her navigate the challenges of treatment:

“The past few months have been a mixed bag of cuddling Sam on the sofa, and spending time with my nearest and dearest when my energy returned. Without them, I would be lost.”

The middle-distance star added that reading messages from fans and supporters brought her to tears, providing comfort during difficult days:

“I’ve shed so many tears reading your beautiful messages. On those tough days, they really gave me a lift. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. I still have a long road ahead but for now, I’m continuing to find the joy in everyday.”

Mageean’s Athletic Achievements

Mageean has enjoyed a stellar career in athletics, representing Ireland on the biggest stages and consistently challenging for medals:

  • European Championships: Gold (2024), Silver (2022), Bronze (2016) in the 1500m
  • Olympics: Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2021
  • Commonwealth Games 2022: Silver medal
  • World Championships 2023: Fourth place
  • National Records: Irish records in 800m, 1000m, 1500m, and the mile

Her career has been marked by resilience through injuries, including a serious ankle problem and an Achilles injury that ruled her out of the 2024 Paris Olympics on the eve of her 1500m heat. Despite setbacks, Mageean’s determination and consistent performance earned her the BBC Northern Ireland Sports Personality of the Year 2023, after breaking national records and finishing fourth in a highly competitive World Championships final.

Inspiring Fans Through Adversity

Mageean’s openness about her cancer diagnosis has inspired fans and fellow athletes alike. By sharing her journey publicly, she has emphasized the importance of gratitude, finding joy in small moments, and the power of a supportive community.

Her story also highlights the mental and emotional strength required for elite athletes to face challenges both on and off the track. Mageean’s ability to remain positive despite difficult circumstances continues to make her a role model for aspiring athletes across Ireland and beyond.
