Bloodbath in Benue: Rival Cult Gangs Kill Eight in Supremacy Clash

At least eight people have been killed in a deadly turf war between rival cult groups across Benue State, including in Makurdi, the state capital, and Jato Aka in Kwande Local Government Area. Security sources described the violence as a fierce battle for territorial dominance.

The clashes, spreading across several towns, are among the deadliest cult-related confrontations in recent times. The violence reportedly began in Otukpo, where one person was killed, and in Gboko, where two were murdered, before spilling into Makurdi and Jato Aka on Wednesday. The attacks claimed three lives in Makurdi and two in Jato Aka.

An eyewitness recounted that the Makurdi victims were shot at close range around midnight.

“Those killed included Mr. Hundred, shot opposite the Wurukum Mosque; Mr. Martins Dagba, also known as ‘Wonder,’ killed near Solace Hotels; and Mr. Aondoaseer Yisa, known as ‘Poka,’ who was shot on Usman Street—all in Wurukum,” the witness said.

The attackers reportedly vanished after the killings. “Human life is worth nothing to those behind these clashes,” the eyewitness added.

Reacting to the incidents, Makurdi Local Government Chairman Joseph Keffi condemned the killings as “senseless” and extended condolences to affected families. Through his Media Aide, Nathaniel Mayorofmbawa, Keffi assured residents of his administration’s commitment to restoring peace and working closely with security agencies to strengthen safety across the LGA.

In Jato Aka, Deputy Superintendent of Police Udeme Edet confirmed that a violent clash between rival cult groups, known as Red and Black, resulted in two deaths, with other victims injured and receiving medical treatment. Eight suspects were arrested, including Adebo Mvaater, Pineter Akurayati, and Daniel Ese, while others fled. Police also recovered a locally fabricated pistol, a cartridge, two axes, and two machetes.

“We are on top of the situation. The suspects will be prosecuted, and the Commissioner of Police remains resolute in eradicating cultism and all forms of criminality in the state,” DSP Edet said.
