Dr. Andrew Orovwigho, a consultant neuro-psychiatrist at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital (FNPH), Enugu, has tragically died following a series of violent attacks that began with his kidnapping.
According to sources, Dr. Orovwigho was abducted on December 30, 2025, in front of his residence and reportedly shot during the incident. He was released by his captors on January 1, 2026, but was allegedly attacked again shortly after. He was shot a second time and abandoned by the roadside. A Good Samaritan rushed him to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment, but he succumbed to his injuries on January 2, 2026.
Colleagues describe Dr. Orovwigho as a dedicated specialist committed to mental health care and the treatment of vulnerable patients. His death has sent shockwaves through the medical community in Enugu and across Nigeria, highlighting growing concerns over the safety of healthcare professionals amid rising incidents of kidnapping and violent attacks.
Dr. Sunny Ken Okafor, Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, Enugu State chapter, confirmed the incident and said an emergency meeting of doctors in Enugu has been scheduled to discuss the situation.
Medical professionals are expressing alarm over what they describe as an increasingly hostile environment for doctors and nurses nationwide. “Doctors and nurses are now endangered species,” one medical professional said. “This is frightening and unacceptable.”
While the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Enugu, has yet to release an official statement, tributes have poured in from colleagues, patients, and professional bodies mourning a devastating and preventable loss.
