Aliko Dangote, Chairman of Dangote Industries Limited (DIL), has officially filed a corruption petition against the former Managing Director of the Midstream Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Farouk Ahmed, with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The petition, submitted through Dangote’s lead counsel, Dr. O.J. Onoja, S.A.N., follows the withdrawal of an earlier complaint from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). Dangote explained that the shift to EFCC is a strategic move aimed at expediting investigation and prosecution.
In the petition, Dangote called on EFCC to investigate allegations of abuse of office, financial misconduct, and illicit enrichment, promising to provide evidence to substantiate the claims. Dr. Onoja emphasized that EFCC, under Chairman Olanipekun Olukoyede, is well-positioned to prosecute financial crimes and corruption-related offences.
The petition highlighted the extravagant lifestyle of Farouk Ahmed and his family as a key concern. Dangote noted that four of Ahmed’s children attended elite secondary schools in Switzerland—including Montreux School, Aiglon College, Institut Le Rosey, and La Garenne International School—incurring estimated costs of $5 million for their secondary education alone. Additional expenses for tertiary education, including a $210,000 tuition for Faisal Farouk’s 2025 Harvard MBA, bring the total alleged expenditure to around $7 million.
“Nigerians deserve transparency, especially when parents in Mr. Ahmed’s home state of Sokoto struggle to pay as little as N10,000 in school fees,” the petition stated.
Dangote’s legal team urged EFCC to conduct a thorough investigation, prosecute any wrongdoing, and send a strong message to public officers about the consequences of corruption. The move reinforces Dangote’s commitment to accountability and transparency in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
