The Lagos State House of Assembly has urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to direct the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) to shut down Yard 158 Events Centre in Oregun. The call comes after the venue reportedly failed to cooperate with official summons related to an unresolved consumer complaint.
The resolution followed a motion presented by Abiodun Tobun, Chairman of the House Committee on Commerce, Industry, and Cooperatives, during plenary. Tobun explained that his committee has been investigating a petition filed by Mrs. Nurat Alaba, who paid N3 million on January 30, 2025, to book the centre for an event initially scheduled for December 21, 2025.
After requesting a date change to December 20, Mrs. Alaba was informed she would incur a 33% cancellation fee, which she accepted, expecting a refund of the balance. However, the management later claimed the fee should be calculated based on the full N6.5 million event cost, ignoring repeated follow-ups.
Despite numerous invitations from both the House committee and LASCOPA, neither the owner nor any representative of Yard 158 Events Centre appeared before the committee, prompting lawmakers to escalate the matter.
“This level of disregard for constituted authority will not be tolerated in Lagos State,” Tobun warned. He appealed to Speaker Mudashiru Obasa to compel the management to cooperate, so the investigation could conclude.
Supporters of the motion, including Nureni Akinsanya, Kehinde Joseph, and Bonu Solomon, highlighted the importance of enforcing legislative authority and warned that corporate defiance undermines consumer protection mechanisms.
In response, Speaker Obasa directed the Clerk of the House, Olalekan Onafeko, to forward the House resolution to the relevant authorities for immediate enforcement.
