Diocese of Oxford Opens Public Consultation Ahead of Bishop Appointment

The Diocese of Oxford has launched a public consultation to gather opinions from the local community ahead of the appointment of a new bishop this year. The diocese is encouraging people of all faiths—or none—to share their views on the qualities and vision they would like to see in the next Bishop of Oxford.

The current Bishop, Dr. Steven Croft, will retire this summer after serving a decade in the role. To ensure the selection reflects the needs and expectations of the wider community, the diocese has opened an online consultation portal available to anyone living, working, or worshipping in Oxfordshire, Berkshire, and Buckinghamshire.

What the Diocese is Seeking

Archdeacon of Dorchester, David Tyler, explained that the consultation aims to identify both the challenges facing the diocese and the personal qualities desired in the new bishop.

“We’re asking for everybody’s opinion, which we value because the role is particularly focused on serving the whole of the community, not just the church,” Tyler said.

The diocese oversees a significant number of institutions, including 800 churches and approximately 280 schools and academies, making the bishop’s role vital in both religious and educational spheres.

Importance of Community Input

The consultation reflects the Church of England’s commitment to community engagement and inclusivity in leadership appointments. By inviting input from residents, workers, and worshippers across the diocese, the process ensures that the incoming bishop will be aware of local concerns, priorities, and opportunities.

The feedback collected will help guide the Crown Nominations Commission, which plays a key role in selecting candidates for episcopal appointments.

How to Participate

The diocese encourages participants to submit their views through its official website. Respondents are asked to comment on areas such as:

  • Challenges facing the diocese today
  • Qualities and skills desired in the new bishop
  • Ways in which the bishop can serve both church members and the wider community

By including voices from diverse backgrounds, the diocese hopes the next Bishop of Oxford will be well-equipped to lead, inspire, and serve the region effectively.
