Nigerian content creator and skit maker Esther Thomas, popularly known as Sunshine, has passed away following complications from a fibroid surgery.

Her death occurred on Friday, January 9, 2026, and was officially announced by her family on Saturday via her verified Instagram page, throwing fans and colleagues in the creative community into mourning.

Family Confirms Tragic Loss

In an emotional statement, the family confirmed Sunshine’s passing and explained the circumstances surrounding her death.

“With heavy hearts, we regret to announce the sudden demise of our beloved sister and daughter, Esther Thomas (also known as Sunshine), who passed away on January 9, 2026, after an unsuccessful surgery,” the statement read.

According to the family, Sunshine had been battling fibroid and underwent surgery in an attempt to address the condition, but sadly did not survive the complications.

“She had fibroid and was operated on, but unfortunately, she didn’t make it. We are currently making arrangements to lay her to rest,” the family added.

Colleague Shares Details of Final Days

Fellow content creator Chidera Madu later shared a detailed account of the events leading to Sunshine’s death in a Facebook post.

He revealed that Sunshine began experiencing severe stomach pain towards the end of 2025, which worsened significantly by early January.

“On December 28, 2025, she complained of stomach pain, which became worse by January 1, leading to her admission at Orchid General Hospital. After several tests and scans, doctors confirmed she had large fibroids,” he wrote.

Alleged Impact of Doctors’ Strike

Chidera further alleged that Sunshine was not receiving proper medical attention due to an ongoing doctors’ strike at the hospital, though this was not immediately known to her family and friends.

“Unknown to us, she was only being given pain relief because the doctors were on strike,” he claimed.

Concerned by the absence of doctors, Chidera said he decided to transfer Sunshine to another hospital on January 2, where treatment continued based on earlier test results.

Surgery Declared Successful Before Tragedy

At the new medical facility, doctors reportedly recommended urgent surgery as Sunshine’s condition deteriorated. The procedure was carried out and initially declared successful.

However, complications later set in, leading to her untimely death.

The news of Sunshine’s passing has sparked an outpouring of grief across social media, with fans and fellow creators paying tribute to her talent, humour, and vibrant personality.
