At least 12 people have died in a tragic multiple-vehicle collision along the Yangoji–Abuja (YGJ–ABJ) corridor at Gada Biyu on Sunday.
The crash involved four vehicles: a coal-laden commercial trailer, a commercial bus, and two cars. Preliminary investigations by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) indicated that speeding and dangerous driving were likely causes.
According to the FRSC, the truck driver lost control while travelling above the legal speed limit, colliding with parked vehicles and triggering a chain reaction.
Of the 18 people involved, five died instantly, while seven more succumbed to injuries at hospitals, bringing the death toll to 12. Three others sustained injuries ranging from cuts and bruises to fractures and head trauma, and are receiving medical care. Victims included eight adult males, four adult females, two male children, and four female children.
The FRSC responded swiftly, arriving at the scene seven minutes after a distress call. Injured victims were transported to Abaji General Hospital, and the deceased were released to families for burial.
Reacting to the tragedy, FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed condemned reckless driving, describing the crash as avoidable. He urged motorists, especially drivers of heavy-duty vehicles, to adhere strictly to speed limits and traffic rules.
Mohammed emphasized the Corps’ commitment to road safety enforcement, public education, and collaboration with stakeholders to reduce traffic accidents and protect lives on Nigerian highways.
