Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has parted ways with New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) leader Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, following a fallout over the 2027 governorship election.
A source revealed that the governor defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to secure his re-election bid after clashes with Kwankwaso, who reportedly was unwilling to support Yusuf for a second term.
Although Yusuf is Kwankwaso’s father-in-law, tensions arose over what the governor described as overhandedness by the party leadership.
The source explained that by joining the APC, Yusuf is expected to automatically assume leadership of Kano APC, significantly improving his chances of securing the governorship ticket in 2027.
“Governor Yusuf made the decision to leave NNPP because his political future in 2027 would have been limited. His supporters believe he has performed well and deserves a second term, which was being blocked,” the source said.
The move is also seen as a strategic alignment with the ruling party at the federal level, strengthening Yusuf’s position and delivering a blow to the NNPP and its leadership.
