A review of Nigeria’s 2026 budget reveals that the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), headed by George Akume, plans to spend N496 million on the purchase of photocopier machines and office furniture.
The budget specifies the “purchase of office equipment, including supply and installation of three heavy-duty photocopy machines for the Cabinet Affairs Office end room, and supply of office furniture.”
This follows a trend in the OSGF’s budget allocations. In 2025, the office allocated a total of N400 million for the distribution of grinding machines across several federal constituencies, including Ifako-Ijaiye (Lagos), Bonny/Degema (Rivers), and Kaduna South (Kaduna). Additionally, the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology spent N195 million on grinding machines for residents in Birnin Kebbi, Aliero, and Maiyama.
Public records also show that in December 2023, SGF Akume spent N9.6 million on branded towels for his 70th birthday celebration in his hometown of Wanune, Tarka LGA, Benue State.
Akume was appointed SGF in June 2023. Earlier, in May 2025, the civil society group Voice of the Voiceless Nigerian called for his suspension over alleged involvement in an N80 billion fraud, citing ongoing investigations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Despite the arrest of his aide, Torhile Uchi, no action had been taken against the SGF, the group claimed.
